NYA Fellowships

Announcement – May 2020

The jury for the NYA Fellowships has decided not to award fellowships in the current application cycle. Unfortunately, we have been unable to identify a candidate whom we believe is equipped to take full advantage of the award. Some of the eligible applications we received showed strong knowledge of our sport, and others displayed considerable skill in data science. However, we believe that both of these attributes are critical to the success of a future football/soccer data analyst. We will reopen applications later this year in an attempt to ensure that the 2020 NYA Fellowships are awarded. Previous candidates will be welcome to reapply. The original announcement is below:

NYA is pleased to offer its third annual fellowships for aspiring data analysts in soccer/football. Each of two fellows will receive the following:

- USD1,000 (paid in two installments)
- A full season of Opta event data for a league of the fellow's choice, reformatted as needed by NYA
- Mentoring via NYA and its contacts throughout the fellowship year
- Dissemination of the fellow's work to soccer/football clubs and other potential users

The fellowships are open to analysts aged 25 and younger on 1 January 2020, and strong preference will be given to analysts from demographic groups underrepresented in the field. Analysts already working in soccer/football roles will not be considered.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a portfolio of one to five freestanding pieces of analysis, and proof of age to with the subject line "2020 Fellowships" by 31 March 2020. Any questions about the fellowships should be directed to the same email address.

Electronic documents and links to URLs are acceptable parts of the portfolio. If necessary, NYA may request to see underlying code or calculations to verify authorship of submissions. All work done by applicants and fellows before, during, and after the fellowships will remain their exclusive property to use as they please.

The jury for the 2020 NYA Fellowships is:

Sarah Rudd
